Hmm, you can tag a group of activities and filter for items having the tag, or items whose parent activity has the tag, or items whose the parent of their parent activity has the tag, or items whose the parent of the parent of their parent activity has the tag. Would this be deep enough? Or would you need more levels of sub-activities?
